Gotta love Spring / Obožujem pomlad

While driving from Bayreuth to Međimurje (in Croatia), Paula sleeping in the car, I noticed something I was oblivious of until that moment. Perhaps because of all the things we had to do and all the worries, I actually had not really noticed it was spring. The nature coming to life in its full blossom. Beautiful. The air smells nicer, there is more colour all around us and it is getting warmer. Can’t help but smile.

Pomlad 2014

Dinosaurs!?! Yeah, this spring these extinct oversized reptiles are springing 🙂 up everywhere. In Bayreuth

, in Arboretum Volčji potok

and our kids seem to be obsessed by them. So flowers and dinosaurs – this is our spring 2014. Oh yeah, Ambrož also has chickenpox, red dots springing up all over his body. Now, ain´t that nice and dandy?! Spring-ings (promise I will not invent any more new words, well at least in the next post) everywhere.

Me kar sili na smeh.

V Bayreuthu, v Arboretumu Volčji potok in najini otroki so obsedeni z njimi. Aja, še to. Ambrož ima norice. Ali ni to prav super duper!? Novi »poganjki« prav povsod.

Manns Brau – Men`s Brew that will appeal to undemanding beer drinkers

Our first time in Bayreuth I accidentally stumbled upon a brewery very near to our home. It is called Manns Brau (Men`s Brewery). It caught my eye because of all the people that were eating and drinking outside of this brewery. And most of those people were workers, dressed in blue working clothes. When I was in primary school I used to go with my dad on trips with his truck. And he thought me an important lesson – if you see a lot of truckers in a Diner, it is probably good and cheap. I just figured it goes the same for when you see a lot of other working people in a Diner. Then and there I decided we are going to try this Diner when we arrive with Zoran and Tine. And so I stuck to my brilliant plan.

DSC_0167

It turned out it really was a good plan. Although, when you read this review, keep in mind we were very hungry and very thirsty after a hard day’s work. The place had a lot of guest even in the evening hours. Another good sign. The food was good and very affordable. The Beer was something else.

We each ordered a beer, two of us white, and two of us dark. The white Beer immediately stuck out because of its colour. It looked like a lemonade. So we said don`t judge a book by it`s cover or in this case don`t judge a beer by it`s colour, and we tried it. It wasn`t very aromatic, nothing in it`s taste stuck out. It was just very very drinkable. Dangerously so. The dark beer was a little more aromatic, but still not very specific. And again very drinkable. We all liked it.

DSC_0162

So Manns Brau – two thumbs up. But I wouldn`t recommend it for people who are looking for a gourmet experience.

First Times – Prvič-ki :)

Although there is nothing I would rather do than to talk about nostalgia and how we miss home, our kids and our friends, it is best to focus on positive things. Just so I do not wallow in self pitty. And there were quite a few of positive thing, little conquests. I call them FIRSTS.

First night spent in our apartment

Well we weren’t alone. So the biggest thing that happened was a lot of snoring. Paula insists I snore, especially when I am tired, although I rank this in the same category as the Sasquatch myth – all too hazy and unconfirmed. But boy were we tired on Saturday after a seven hour drive and all that unpacking. Therefore I may have snored a bit. But so did Tine, and by his words so did my brother Zoran. Considering that we all slept in the same room because there was no furniture in the apartment, the room was probably vibrating with snoring. But it was a nice night nevertheless. Although, I do not remember what I dreamt. Dreams on the first night in a new place are supposed to be important – they give you a foresight or foretell the future or something like that. Now I will never know…

First breakfast

DSCN3750 Simply nice! Preprosto prijetno.

The best breakfast in the world, with my brother, Tine and Paula. We had nothing special, just eggs, but these were cooked by me on our used cooker we bought with the kitchen for 62 EUR. I was sure the thing won´t work, but it did and it does. It was good food and pleasant company, but soon after Zoran and Tine had to go because they had a long drive ahead of them.

First light

DSCN3752 This will allways be my first. Ta bo vedno moja prva.

Let there be light. And let it NOT electrocute me or burn down the apartment. I don´t know if I mentioned it, the fact is I am not very practical. I am a lawyer, what use do I have for practicality, right!? Well when something needs to be done and there is no one else, then comes Dominik to the rescue. So this past week I had to install new lights (chandelier and light bulb holder or the plastic stuff you connect the wires to) on three wires that were sticking out of the ceiling in every room. When I successfully connected the first, I realized the problem was different sorts of lights and not the basic knowledge of electricity. So now we have light(s).

First plumbing

Plumbing is a synonym to “going insane”! I would loose my mind, if I was a plumber. With plumbing everything goes awry and that means spilling and mess. The messiest of messes. And when you clean it, be ready to do it again. There is still something leaking under the kitchen sink. Aaaaargghhhhh…

DSCN3756 Come on! Look at this incomprehensible mess of a plumbing situation! A lahko pogledate to brezupno stanje!

First movie

On the second night Paula and I were alone in the apartment. And you know what that means. 😉 Movies. What did you think it meant? So the first movie we watched was Snowpiercer, starring Chris Evans. It isn´t a feel good movie, but it is a great movie. While watching it somehow I kept thinking that we are all on a global Snowpiercer train, most of us in the back and few in the front. The “lucky” one percent. Blah…

First time

Again, not what you think. Paulas´ first time to work. The semester has not yet started, so Paula had time to familiarize herself with people and instrument she will be working on. She leaves every day before I wake, so she hasn’t lost her joy for work apparently. Got to respect that. I am just happy she feel ok in the new place.

So there you have it, our firsties. Nothing if compared to someone´s first time on Everest, but important to us all the same.

Prvi zajtrk

Najboljši zajtrk vseh časov s svojim bratom, Tinetom in Paulo.

In sem pač moral in naredil. Sedaj imamo luč(i).

Nooooorooooo…

Prvi film

Drugo noč sva bila s Paulo sama v stanovanju. In verjetno vsi veste kaj to pomeni ;).

Film.

Saying goodbyes! – Poslavljanje

Saying goodbye is not just hugging your friends and shedding a tear. It is about doing things for the very last time. Hugging a friend or members of my family is a sad but sort of a pleasantly sad feeling. Doing a thing for the last time is just sad and fills you up with a nostalgic feeling, making you think that you will never get to do that thing again. It is silly actually, because rationally you know you will get to do all those things again. But a little persistent thought lingers in the back of your head, forcing you to think: “What, if this is the last time!”. This is the feeling I got when hugging my brother and my mother, taking a bath in our bathtub, watching UFC on a big-ass screen at my friend Tine`s house, hearing my neighbours loud noises (wait, what!!!). Ok, ok, so I get extremely emotional at moments like these. There will be a lot more similar moments in the following years. I just have to remember the essentials – basically my family – and I will be fine.

To make things short, a lot has happened this past week. We said a lot of goodbyes, we packed a ton of things and we got them all to our new (temporary) home.

DSCN3744

Making a trip like this, when it feels like most of your life is packed up in boxes, you need reliable people to help you. There is no “solo” in projects like this, but luckily there is no “I” in FRENDS (stole that one from a movie The Crash Reel, just cause I like the message) are lucky enough to have quite a few of FRENDS. I do not know, if it was the promise of pizza and beer that lured them to our “moving party” , but I like to believe it was our friendship that was the cause 🙂 (of course it was). Mirko, Aleš, Gašper and David (and  everything was supervised by my mom) stacked our life in boxes onto a truck like it was nothing. We were done in about two hours and the result was an overpacked little truck (well, next to the overpacked Berlingo). Of course there are also Paula´s parents who are taking care of our two kids this week so we can get things ready for their arrival (god I miss them so much – the kids, not the parents 🙂 ) .

DSCN3743

No, I have not forgotten two essential helpers – the alfa and omega of HELP – my brother from another mother Tine and my brother from my mother Zoran. They helped packing, loading, driving, unloading, unpacking and installing the necessities in Bayreuth. It is amazing how much knowledge and practical wisdom (yeah, that is the right word – wisdom) these two guys have. We just could not do it without them. We could do with a lot more of them, so we were sad to see them leave, but we know they have their own lives to live.

So, thanks to all of these amazing people, I am sitting on my “couch, that is actually a bed with a pull out bed” writing our on-line diary.

My hearth and love to you all. And to all I could not get to say goodbye…

Tine in moj genetski brat Zoran.

Moje spoštovanje in ljubezen vsem.

Master of Law. F..k yeah – Magister prava. Končno.

I did it. After a measly, neglectable 7 years, I managed to successfully defend my masters’ degree. Today is a good day. Although, didn`t it take Odysseus less time to get home to Ithaca? Unfortunately, my Odyssey of the long journey towards educational brilliance won`t be eternalized in any epic story. Maybe there will be somebody in Hollywood who will be willing to pay top dollars for my life story. Don`t worry, I am not holding my breath.

Nevertheless, the fact is I did something today I never thought I wanted to do. It`s always good to pleasantly surprise yourself. From today on I will be known as Master of Law (I bet there is no comic book hero that goes by that name – well not exactly the same: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Man_%28Fawcett_Comics%29 ).

DSCN3739

The next step – exodus.

Od danes naprej me lahko kličete – Magister Prava. Ali pa Dominik, je v bistvu vseeno. 😉

Naslednji korak – selitev.

First impressions / Prvi občutki

As I wrote in the First beer post, Paula and I went to Bayreuth last week. We left on Sunday and stayed until Monday at Paula´s friend house in Coburg (a small city that is one hour drive away from Bayreuth). This was the only way we could make our 10 o´clock appointment on Monday for the handover of the apartment. I already mentioned that Paula has an extraordinary ability of keeping in touch with people. So we (two Slovenians) stayed in Coburg, Germany with Judit, who is Hungarian, married to a Croatian man named Ljubo. If that isn´t a nationalities cocktail, I don´t know what is. And Paula has a lot more friends like this all over Europe if not the world. Quite impressive I dare say.

It took us about 7 hours to get to Coburg, so you can imagine we were kind of tired. But our two wonderful hosts gave us a royal welcome. After a nice lunch and a lot of catching up, we relaxed a bit while Judit and Ljubo gave us pointers on living in Germany.

The next day, after a nice 8 hours of sleep, we headed to Bayreuth. It was sunny just like our connection Angela in the Welcome center of Bayreuth University. Without her we would have had a harder time of getting around Bayreuth. She helped us with the acquisition of the apartment and she even took the time to go for a drive around Bayreuth just to show us how to navigate this relatively small city.

Bayreuth is small, even according to Slovenian standards (the whole of Slovenia could be one big city if compared to mega-cities like Mexico City, New York or other I can´t remember but am sure they are out there :P). With 70.000 inhabitants Bayreuth is way smaller than our home town Ljubljana. And in this case small is good. When arriving into an unknown city it is easier to familiarize yourself with it, if its proportions are manageable. Bayreuth is like that, manageable with logical urban infrastructure (especially the main road that circles the city center).

And our apartment is in the center of this small city. We got the apartment for low rent because it is supposed to be a social apartment, but there hasn`t been an eligible person in quite some time (I still don´t know what that means, but I am not complaining). The apartment is great, we love it, but it was completely bare. For all who wish to move to Germany, you have to prepare for the fact that the apartments are rented out bare (most of them completely, some have Einbaukueche – installed kitchen). Ours was bare like a newborn. So we had to furnish it. And here comes Angela to the rescue – again (somehow it seem her name exhibits her angelic function when it comes to us). She showed us a store the likes I haven`t seen in Slovenia. It is simply an used furniture store, simply wonderful. They have amazing used furniture for ridiculous prices. So we went there the second day and bought the kitchen (with an oven and a hotplate), working desk, sofa that is actually a bed with a pull out bed (confusing I know) and a small lamp. Everything for 133 EUR. And …wait for it … they delivered everything into our apartment for 15 EUR. I call that a bargain with capital B.

The second thing that impressed me (well next to some unbelievable Bratwurst (it was a hot-dog in a delicious bun) I ate for lunch) was the central garden – Hofgarten (5 min on foot from our apartment). It is quite large and most importantly it has a playground for children. I absolutely loved it.

Most of the time I was painting the apartment and Paula was getting to know everybody in the laboratory. So there were no real adventures (well not counting the Rathaus experience where nobody talked English! and we had to get things done with our limited German), we just took great comfort that we had basic necessities all set up.

Hofgarten sculptures are quite nice

Have to figure out what these are:

and what is the meaning of this:

The third thing that also kind of stuck with us was the family of our host in Bayreuth (we couldn`t stay in our apartment because we didn`t have electricity yet but most importantly there was no internet – what were we supposed to do in the evening…talk?!). They were absolutely amazing and we are grateful they took us in for four days and that they gave me Zwickl (I say that with a tear in my right eye).

So there you have it. With some pictures next to the text I think you get the idea how it was for Paula and I our first time staying in Bayreuth. It will be a whole other ballgame when our two kids arrive.

Slovenski tekst še pride…

Beauty

Another beer entry. For all who think: “This guy is an alcoholic!” I have just one thing to say – tasting beer is important work of cultural significance. You don´t believe me?! I have proof:

DSCN3536

You see?! It is a Franconian culture thing. Important from the point of view of homeland (heimat), tradition (well, that spells the same) and enjoyment (genuss). And I am a cultural worker doing generally beneficial work. So there you have it, let`s get back to beer.

I have found a beauty. WEISENOHER (brewed in a Kloster (monastery) in Weißenohe). Ok the name sucks and is hard to pronounce, but the beer has one of the most beautiful colours I have seen in a beverage. It is like bronze or something. Just looking at it makes me smile 🙂 .

DSCN3534

And it is a fine tasting beer, with a little bitter aftertaste but still very drinkable. As for the whole impression it seems like it is a mixture of white and dark beer. The only complaint I have is that it seems a bit stale, like it has been opened too long (you can see there is hardly any foam on the top, and I tried foaming it up while pouring, but with little success). All in all a good beer for my taste.

The First Beer

Yeah I know I said we start our mission on first of April. So we cheated a bit, we had to. When relocating a whole family, there are a few things you have to take care of. First you need an apartment. So Paula and I went to Bayreuth last week to secure us a place to live in (more about this in First Impressions). During that time I was sick (I had bronchitis and inflamed sinuses), so I was really careful of what I eat and drink. Therefore it appeared as though I would not get to try any beers. Thankfully I was wrong.

Obviously soccer is a big thing in Germany. So our first week in Bayreuth, while staying at the house of Paula host professor, I was invited to a soccer game between FC Bayern and Arsenal (a return match). Even in Slovenia it is customary to bring something to a soccer game (chips or drinks), so I decided to bring a beer from a closest brewery next to our apartment. Because I didn`t have a fridge the beers I brought weren`t cold. But the host was prepared. And I didn`t have the nerves to decline an offered beer (I was afraid it would cause an international incident 🙂 ).

So my first beer in Bayreuth was Zwickl, brewed in Bayreuth.

DSCN3519

The first taste I had scared me because I thought I already found it – the best beer in Germany (maybe it was just the effect of relief that I didn`t hate it – we shall see in time). Zwickl is a dark (dunkel) beer that is extremely drinkable. It has enough caramel taste with creamy texture that makes it a keeper. So, yeah I recommend Zwickl to anyone who can get their hands on it. I sure am going to try it a couple more times (already did – but hush, don`t tell anyone).

This is for the guys (and women) who love Beer

Bayreuth and all of Franconia are highly populated by breweries. I feel it is my manly duty to try them all. Will I succeed or will I go down in a drunken stupor?! No matter what, I will do my best to find one beer who rules them all (yeah I am also a Tolkien fan). You can follow my beer exploits under this category.

WARNING!!! If you are expecting an expert opinion of the beer I drink, you are on the wrong blog. All I am capable of transferring to you is my experience while drinking the beer, not a Beer Sommelier (dunno if this is the correct expression but it feels right) expert review of the content.
