Above is a sketch from Ambrož on the theme of a cartoon Frozen.

Paula has been working at her new position well over a month now. Every day like clockwork she gets up at six AM (or even sooner, depends on our early riser Ambrož who is known to get up earlier than six AM and always asks the same question: »Mom, is it day already? I don`t want to sleep anymore!«. Paula exercises every morning, sometimes with Ambrož, she makes coffe, talks a little with Ambrož, wakes up the two family sleepy heads, gives us kisses and hurries with her Rog (made in Slovenia, probably the only one of its kind in Bayreuth) bike to work.

Everything we do for the ten hours she is gone, I try to document in the blog, until she comes home to us past five PM. I think it is high time I write something about what she is doing in the meantime.

Paula was enthusiastic about the lab from the start. The things I was able to remember from her tellings, were mostly about the fine organisation of the lab and good leadership of the group she is working in. Every week every person from the group has to give a short report on the progress of their work and every newcommer has to have an initial lecture to introduce themselves and their work. The equipment of the lab gives our Faculties something to strive to, but what interested me as a lawyer was the steps the institutions take to protect their intellectual property. Every researcher has a designated research book which he uses to write down all of his accomplishments and methods. This book belongs to the Institution of the researcher and he has to hand it over when he leaves. As far as I know none of the Faculties in Slovenia use this approach. Can you imagine how much knowledge is lost this way, with every researcher that leaves the Faculty?! One of the things that stuck in my memory was the protocol for using the labs equipment. Every time a researcher needs new equipment like »glass-thingies-I-can-only-name-in-Slovenian-and-even-in-Slovenian-only-a-few«, she has to order it through a person who prepares them and hands them over to the researcher with a bill. Yes, an informatory bill, so that every person knows how much this equipment costs, although they don`t have to pay for it themselves. I find that interesting.

Pauli is also very enthusiastic about her colleagues that are a very colourful bunch, as they come from various corners of the earth. Right now she is closely working with a young man from Iran named Hasan (he is the one that I was supposed to go out for a beer, but I got stood up 🙂 ). She shares the lab with a Vietnamese researcher and a Japanese researcher. Crazy right, and so interesting.

Pauli also enrolled into a German language course, where she met people from Spain and even from Africa. The most »exotic« person I met is an Albanian karateka that shares a word or two with me in Serbo-Croatian language.

Although she is having a good time, learning new things, which was the plan, she did have a tough time last week when something didn’t go her way with some colouring of cells or something (I really have to write these things down). And what does she do? She finds out the contacts of the guy who came up with the method, contacts him, and talks to him over Skype (as I remember he is currently working in USA and comes from France). All that Paula complained about was the fact she is going to be very independent in the execution of the project. But I thing that makes it more of a challenge from which she will learn tons of new scientific things.

Meanwhile Hertourage is exploring Bayreuth.

Slovenska raziskovalka:

– torej ves know-how dognanja in izumu, napredki itd.). Ta zvezek mora Paula prepustiti instituciji, v kateri dela.
