Secret corners of Bayreuth / Skriti kotički Bayreutha

We often go shopping in St. Georgen –  an industrial zone on the outskirts of Bayreuth. Once we were driving the same way we have done for tens of times before, when I glimpsed something that looked like a man in the air. Because I had to mindful of the road I couldn`t take a closer look. The next time Paula was driving so I took a longer look and saw that behind some bushes was a skateboard park you could barely see from the street. There is no sign no advertisement. I decided that when we have time, we`ll have a look.

So we came looking for this:

CAM00528

What we found was a Pirate Ship playground. So we kind of ignored the skateboard park and went straight to playing:

CAM00529

Now I wonder what is Bayreuth keeping hidden from us – the secrets waiting for us to unveil.

Nature is beautiful, nature is gross! / Narava je lepa, narava je ogabna!

Grrrrrrrr G.R.R.Martin is awaiting me on the couch, all ready and willing (his book, not the man himself. I think he is too big to fit on our couch anyway), so picture-post-day it is. We tried to find and catch some frogs today at Erememitage. We did see them, but all we caught was this (once or twice I almost puked, but I tried to look tough in front of the kids and act as it is sooooo interesting – nature can really be gross sometimes):

DSCN5557 DSCN5553

You have already seen these – you have to look close to see them (they are on the stem of the flower, I bet most of you didn`t see it the first time), because they are transparent and look like slime, but they are not slime. Still don`t know what they are. Help, anybody, because Paula is at a loss.

DSCN5643

We did get some tadpoles in the net. The kids did not want to touch them / Smo pa ujeli nekaj paglavcev. Otroka se jih nista hotela dotakniti.

 DSCN5647

Then we accidentally caught this dead thing. Do not even want to know what that is. / Potem smo ujeli to mrtvo stvar. Niti nočem vedeti kaj je.

 DSCN5644

There are a lot of these guys. / Teh je pa polno.

DSCN5649 DSCN5650

Mostly the nature is like this!

Work / Delo

Today Mojca woke up with a swollen left eye. I didn`t notice it well into the second hour after she woke. A swollen eye usually means we stay at home. But this time I think it is a reaction to a – wait for it – mosquito bite. Yes, you read that right; there are mosquitos already here in Bayreuth. That is a price to pay for all that water. After I figured this out we went outside a little to Hofgarten, but before that, we made another kind of rattle, this one is pretty cool if I say so myself.

Toga with that hat, come on!

Later well go for a dip in the fountain again because outside the sun is working double-time and the kids love to cool off.  Update a few hours later: Scratch that. Well I am not a doctor but a concerned father and I decided we will stay at home because Mojca`s eye looks worse. And I don`t think that a swim is a good idea.

Before we go, we`ll make We just made hot dogs with sauerkraut and Frankfuerter bratwurst that will go into some very delicious bread we bought earlier in the town. Even now I can say that Germans really know their stuff when it comes to bread, they really do and they have a ton of private bakeries all over, so there is no lack of choice.

So today there will be no joy of swimming, but a joy of stuffing our faces:

Kids did not like it as much as their father / Otroci niso tako uživali v tem kot njihov oče.

This slow day kind of gives me time to update you on Paula`s progress at work. As she tells me things have really picked up. She has had some success with the new methods she uses and she has nice colleagues to turn to when she needs to ask something. In the start of June we will be going to Berlin to meet the president of Germany (well not just the four of us but all the Humboldt scholarship recipients, so I expect I will see the president from very afar and will not be able to charm him into giving me a job 🙂 ) and we will be staying in Berlin for four days, cost covered by the Humboldt foundation (we will also visit the Berlin Zoo and Aquarium but on our own cost). In July we will probably be heading for a long weekend to Ljubljana, so get ready all you guys – reserve the time so we`ll get to see each other (mental note: call your mom, brother and Alenka to let them now we are coming and that they will take care of the kids for the weekend 🙂 ). In middle of August we will be doing some traveling across Germany – another treat from Humboldt Foundation (they are so nice aren`t they) and the kids will have a nice vacation at their grandparents in Međimurje (mental note: let the grandparents know they will have visitors 🙂 ).

In the meantime we do expect to have some more visits. The sun is out, the numerous beers are cold and I (that means me, Ambrož and Mojca, we come as a package deal) have all the time in the world to show you the beauty of Bayreuth and Oberfranken.

A small victory

I haven`t gotten around to this one, because there is just too little time for writing. I can barely manage to keep up with one post a day.

The first day of my friend Damjan`s visit (you can read it in Vino – a family visit) we went to a pub I have been meaning to visit for a while now (it came recommended by several people).

CAM00526

After a few beers I told Damjan that I really wanted a Zwickl glass (the kind I posted in the Foreigners). And Damjan came up with a brilliant idea (every idea seems brilliant when you`re drunk, but this one was, because it was so obvious) and proposed that we buy the glasses we were drinking from. So we asked the bartender, he had to ask his boss, the boss said yes and we went home with two new original Zwickl glasses.

CAM00527

A small victory for a man on a mission I would say. Paula wasn`t impressed. These days it is hard to impress her with these beer exploits 🙂 .

A Story / Zgodba

Lately I have been noticing that the kids like and understand stories more than they used to. As I am a big fan of stories myself I told them a story about a hobbit (yeah, ok I stole the story, but they do not know that). But this was not just an ordinary telling, we tried to recreate the story as we walked the gorgeous Eremitage from the gardens to the Dragon Cave, where our story ended. On the way, while the kids were immersed in the story, their minds were opened to all kinds of new things. They just needed their imagination stirred a little and then everything, even a tiny bit new, was interesting.

Like these things, which I still do not know what they really are (maybe my household doctor of biology will know or one of the many readers of this blog will recognize what they are), but for us today they were little baby dragon hatchlings (they were gross enough):

DSCN5553 DSCN5557

In our story these were the old kings of the kingdom who slew the first dragon:

DSCN5559

Then this fire flower crossed our path. I To us it looked as if touched by the dragon fire:

DSCN5571

On the way we got parched and hot, so we found a vendor of a magical thing that is cool even in the sunlight and melts in our mouths – amazing right – the things you can find in stories.

And at this point of the story I made a mistake in the telling. Although the kids are obviously old enough to get excited by a story and they have enough patience to listen to it, you must never ever mention a thing that excites them too much. In the story of the Hobbit it was the mention of Orcs and Trolls that blew the roof off. It was just too much for them to find out that there are such gruesome things as Orcs, even if they are just fictional. »Daddy, why were there orcs. Where do they come from? What do they look like? What did they do? Why are they ugly and scary? Did they win the battle?«. And so the story ended, under a storm of questions, incited by my mention of a creature their mind is too young to grasp.

Still, it was a good story, and walking through it I realized I fell in love with Eremitage for the third time (maybe I am just that easy). The details of this park are…are…I can`t seem to find a proper word, so I`ll just say awesome. Later on we found small pool, a little bit forgotten I might say, but it had frogs and tadpoles in it. I had to threaten the kids that I will leave them there if they aren`t going to the car immediately. They ran laughing. It was a good adventure.

In the end I will try to stimulate the imagination of anyone who reads this.

Do you remember this story:

DSCN5573

And do you know this one:

DSCN5574

Slovenska verzija:

»Ati, zakaj so bili orki? Ati, od kje prihajajo orki? Kako izgledajo? Kaj so naredili? Zakaj so grdi in grozni?

Crazy weather / Ponorelo vreme

I swear to the Jedi order that not two days ago we had to dress almost for winter (well us not the Bayreuthians who are dressing like it is summer since March). Not in my wildest imagination could I expect that I should dress the kids any different today. The moment we stepped out all dressed for 10 degrees, Mojca and I started sweating (Ambrož takes longer to sweat), so we started undressing all of our four layers of clothing. This time the German weather forecast was dead on – 25 degrees and a blazing sun all day.

Why wait for summer we said and we gave it all we had. First we took of our shoes.

DSCN5518

Then we found some water to play with (in Bayreuth that is not hard to do).

DSCN5502 DSCN5503 DSCN5504

When that wasn`t enough, we decided to go but naked.

DSCN5528 DSCN5533 DSCN5546

But the last one I rushed into too carelessly because I didn`t bring any change of clothes. So soon the kids were crying next to me on a sunny bench (crying because they wanted to go back in the water), drying of the wet clothes, so we could go back home.

Can`t wait for summer to begin, but I do hope the weather won`t be so unpredictable as the last two weeks (we had hail, rain, scorching sun, winds that damaged trees in one day so help me the force). I am just happy the circumstances are not nearly as bad as in Serbia and Bosnia – but I can`t but feel proud to read that Slovenians and even Croatians are helping their Balkan brothers in the time of need.

Sun and Sickness / Sonce in bolezen

Just when the sun returns to us after two weeks of bad weather, Ambrož falls sick (I think it is all the running he did on Saturday). Yesterday he was so sick he had his body temperature over 39 degrees Celsius, today, after a good night sleep under some drugs (Brufen, we just gave him Brufen to lower his temperature) he is a lot better.

But it is still hard to stay inside on a wonderful day as today`s. Staying in also means I have to be more imaginative when it comes to figuring what to do together with the kids. Therefore I turned to my best friend in need – the internet. Mojca’s godmother Mici sent me a link to a site that has wonderful ideas for what to do with the kids when you are stuck inside. And they have a list of 100 really cool things to keep the young ones occupied: http://theimaginationtree.com/2014/01/ultimate-play-activities-collection-rainy-day-fun-boredom-buster-activites.html

So, today, with what I had at hand, we decided to do a rattle out of some old egg boxes. And we also made figurines for the game Ludo.

I will just post some pics and go back to waking two sleepy-heads up (three hours of afternoon nap is enough I think):

Slovenski bolniki:

Happy Birthday Judit

Have you ever had a perfect day that took you completely by surprise? Today was one of those days for me.

All of you regular readers of this blog probably remember Judit and Ljubo I mentioned in one of my first posts (First impressions). This same Judit invited us to the celebration of her birthday. Don`t ask me which one, because I do not know, but Judit is a dish to look at, so it really doesn`t matter. Back to the subject of perfect days.

She invited us to join her in the celebration today. The weather forecast for today was bleak at best. Therefore I could not have expected a day like it actually played out. The weather was absolutely wonderful (I am starting to lose my trust in the German weather forecasting abilities). And the people that came to the party (next to Judit and Ljubo, and evidently my family, I didn`t know anyone else) were just lovely. The fact that our kids wanted to go home with them at one point and not us, is a clear evidence of the awesomeness of Judit`s friends and family. To top it all we were a nationalities cocktail once again – three Hungarian women, four Slovenians, two representatives of Poland and a Croatian. In addition the place Judit chose was a blast.

Judit invited us to Kloster Banz (it is a huge abbey in the Coburg region). It looked huge already while driving towards it:

DSCN5298 DSCN5307

Even from a distance it looked huge! / Že od daleč je izgledal ogromen!
Even from a distance it looked huge! / Že od daleč je izgledal ogromen!

But once there it was a mouth opener. The yard was neat and the inside of the church breath-taking (I wasn`t able to take a single usable picture inside of the church as I was taking photos incognito because of the prohibition of photos in the church – I am a rebel what can I say):

But what really stole the show was this:

A ball – simple/ Preprosto žoga!

DSCN5384 DSCN5485

It was a present for the kids from our new Polish friends Filip (I do not know if I spelled it right, but it is better than Fifi, a nickname his future wife Paulina gave him) and Paulina. Filip, as it turns out, has a lot of spare energy, which he most generously spent while playing with our kids:

DSCN5459
I called this “The Polish Transportation device”/ Temu sem rekel poljsko prevozno sredstvo.

It is so nice to see the kids playing and laughing like they did today and all it took was Filip. So, thank you for that Filip, the kids will have a delta sleep tonight (or they will keep dreaming about how awesome Filip is and they will wake constantly).

»Give them games and bread, and they will love you for it« – I`m quite sure I stole that from the movie Gladiator (but probably some Roman emperor said it once before the movie came out :)), but that is exactly what we got today. Next to games we got splendid food at the abbey. Just look:

And the cake was finger-licking-delicious (look at the picture at the head). As I am a man on a mission (a beer mission) I also got to try a local beer called Weismainer

DSCN5349

and I am still flustered about what spice they use in this beer, but it is definitely a must try while you are stuffing yourself with a tasty meal at Banz Abbey.

Judit, we hope we made the celebration of your birthday a little more special with our presence, because you sure gave us a perfect day. Thank you.

Judit, upam, da smo s svojo prisotnostjo naredili praznovanje tvojega rojstnega dneva vsaj malo bolj posebno, ker ti si nam dala popoln dan. Hvala ti za to.

Vino – a family visit / Vino – družinski obisk

It was three o`clock on a weekday morning half a year ago and I was sitting on a toilet, doing what I usually do when I have indigestion problems – because of my IBS that is quite a common occurrence. I still do not know why but I decided to google one of my best friends from high school Damjan. We lost touch about 6 years ago, for no apparent reason I can remember. Maybe it was just the fact that we had very different lives after high school so we slowly drifted apart. I don`t know why I googled him, although I think it was the »Paula influence«. I told her few days before that I had a dream about Damjan and in the dream he was in trouble. To this she replied that this is life telling me to call him. Google was the only tool I had to reconnect.  However, googling his name yielded no results, so I used the last thing that he told me about his life – that he met a cute Australian woman, a lawyer by profession working in England. That information, after a little bit of trying, helped me find his wife (she took over his surname, so I put one and one together). I got her work e-mail, said: »Why not! «, and wrote her an e mail.

She replied and the result of that late night visit to the loo was the two day visit this week. And they brought an addition to the family with them – a small cute little boy of two months. Apparently Damjan and Nicola (his wife) go quite often to Slovenia and Croatia for holidays with car and they pass Nuremberg on their way (that is just 45 minutes from Bayreuth). Damjan, true to his word, took two days for the visit and those two days went by in a flash.

We were nervous about the visit – because I haven`t seen Damjan for 6 years and because I haven`t met his wife yet and of course because they have a baby – we haven`t had a baby in our house over night for quite a while. We tried to make them as comfortable as possible and I tried to get Damjan as drunk as he can get. With the first task I think we succeeded, the second plan misfired. Damjan as it turns out can really hold his liqueur. I got so drunk that I almost puked in front of everybody the next day. Not my proudest moment and I will not tease Damjan to get drunk with me the next time we see each other. But Damjan has seen me at my worst in high school, way worse than this– there was this incident that we reminisce over every time we see each other. Well to make a long story short I got so drunk in the second year of high school that he had to carry me home where I collapsed and puked all over the place (mom was not pleased, dad gave me his sternest of looks – oh yeah, I was grounded for a month). Again, not one of my proudest moments. While we were together, conquering Bayreuth, we weren`t remembering our glory days in the high school as we used to (about how he was a real catch – he has this Latino Dalmatino thing going on, he still does; while I had my sport and the interest in school affair – for me those days are alas over – all of that made us kind of popular in high school, so we liked to remember that time.), we preferred to talk about the future plans and the ongoing stuff (family and kids). High school is evermore becoming a distant memory.

His wife is very pleasant and gorgeous and their son is just a »sugar plum« (this is what she called him – I never heard it before but it was adorable). In addition to showing Damjan the wonders of German beer at which I failed miserably, we showed them the town centre, Hofgarten and Eremitage. For anything more we would just need more time. Ahead are some pictures from their visit.

They said they had a great time and that they will visit us again in August. I hope they weren`t being polite. It was just so nice seeing my friend again, a teenager I once knew, the man I know now and his storybook family. Hope there are some adventures to be had for us in the future, so that when we get old we won`t just laugh about how I got stupor drunk in high school…

If you are still wondering about the title of this post – Vino is Damjan`s nickname that is an abbreviation of his surname.

A nice surprise / Prijetno presenečenje

Aaaaaaannnd I`m back. Uiiii, it has been a fantastic two days of visits (well more like one visit that lasted two days). First there is something I have to post before I write about the visit.

We received a postcard from my former high school friend Tina. Here it is:

Postcard / Razglednica
Postcard / Razglednica

Tina and I are still friends. She is one of the rare high school friends that I`m still in contact with. She is great – energetic and an optimist by nature and she is a mother of a wonderful girl Ema who was born just one week before (or is it after. Now, I am never going to hear the end of complaints about my ability to remember a date) Ambrož and Mojca (if that is not a synchronisation of lives I don`t know what is). Ema is very tall for her age (she towers over Ambrož with more than 5 cm) so we call her Big-Ema (although she is tall and not overweight). Ema gets her height after her father, who is I think almost 2 m tall and one of the tallest competitive windsurfers out there (I think he told me that once). You can say they are a very interesting family as they travel a lot (a lot of a lot – take an average family that travels and multiply it by at least ten) because of Tine`s competitions he has all over the world and because Tina also likes to travel. But lately, as far as I know, Tine is slowly starting to retire from competitive sport, and is running a company called Different (here is a link to their page: http://www.different-eye.com/ ), that is actually a company he founded and they manufacture and sell »different« sun-glasses. He is running this company with the same passion and drive of a former one of the best world windsurfers.

Why am I talking about Tine so much? Not because I like him (although I do, he is really a nice guy), but because he is the one on the postcard we got from his wife Tina (well Ema dictated and Tina wrote it). About SLO 6 – they made fun of him because of his number at competitions calling him Slow Sex 🙂 Tina disagrees :P.

Anyhoo, thank you for the postcard Tina and Tine and Big-Ema, it was very welcome.

Slovenska razglednica v Nemčiji:

Iiiiiin evo me nazaj.

To firmo Tine vodi z enakim zagonom in odločnostjo nekdanjega visoko rangiranega tekmovalca v windsurfanju.
