Trash

Die Gelbe Sacke and sorting of trash – Germans overdoing it

Germans have everything sorted out neatly. The public toilets are clean, the streets are clean and well maintained, public parks are incredible and so on. But for all this effectiveness, there is a price to pay. Some things can get incredibly complicated. One of them is the separation of different kinds of waste.

When we arrived, Angela warned us about the Gelbe Sacke – yellow bags. The “main” trash in Germany (main being because they give a lot of emphasis on sorting it out) is the pfand (plastic bottles) and other sort of plastic waste. First you must distinguish between resellable plastic and nonresellable. E.g. plastic bottles with liquids are usually resellable and that means you want to collect them separately. One plastic bottle will yield you at least 20 cents per bottle when you return it to the shop (that is the big automated pfand disposer in the shops), so actually it pays to be green. The same principle applies to the resellable glass bottles.

All other plastic waste has to be separated. Bu there is again a specific to plastic waste in comparison to other waste (organic, paper and general waste). For other waste (that is except glass and plastic waste) there are waste bins almost everywhere, most commonly inn front of the apartment buildings. But plastic waste has a separate collecting protocol that is the Gelbe Sacke. You have to collect the plastic waste in these bags, that you get for free only in Rathaus. And then once a month they come and collect the bags that you have to carry out and put on a specifically designated space in front of the building.

Gelbe sacke

If you forget about it, you will have to make room and store the extra bags for another month.

Also you will soon observe that there are no waste bins for other glass waste. For this there are special waste points across the city (we know of four) to where you take glass waste. And then it comes complicated. You have to separate the glass according to color – black, green, white and undefined.

There you go, we have a lot of work with the things we throw away, but at least it works judging by the cleanliness of the city.

Slovenci spravljajo smeti v Nemčiji:

Rumena vreča in ločevanje smeti – ko Nemci pretiravajo

Nemci imajo vse lepo urejeno.
